Melissa Kim
(Founder)
Melissa Kim is a senior at Seoul International School. As a student who loves biology and chemistry, Melissa has been involved in various STEM events and activities. Through such experience, she has been exposed to gender-based disparities within the field, which are often exacerbated in underprivileged communities where girls do not have the power nor knowledge to stand up and advocate for themselves.
Founding Girls Be Strong in 2020, Melissa strives to uplift and support girls and young women, specifically in Uganda. As a Christian, she was introduced to Reverend Tae-Yong Choi through her church, who, by chance, was a missionary at Uganda who founded Hope Hill Learning Centre. Sharing the same vision, Melissa and her team works with Rev. Choi to support students at Hope Hill Learning Centre as well as many single mothers living in local villages.
Through her work, Melissa aims to break barriers and help these young women reach their full potential, contributing to a brighter future for Uganda and beyond.

MISSION STATEMENT
At Girls Be Strong, our mission is to combat the pressing issues of child marriage, education disruption, and Sickle Cell disease in Uganda. With a deep-rooted commitment to empowering girls and women, we strive to create lasting change through innovative solutions and community engagement.
Ultimately, our mission is to create a future where every girl in Uganda is free from the shackles of child marriage, has access to quality education, and receives adequate support for their health needs. By working together, we can break barriers, uplift communities, and empower girls to realize their full potential, thereby fostering a more equitable and prosperous society.
